Editors Note: This is a review of Balgove Larder Steak Barn night, which is on Thursday evenings’, rather than a review of the Balgove Larder Cafe. Upcoming is also a review of Balgove Larder Night Market.

Technically Balgove Larder probably isn’t classified as a pub. But there is an atmosphere, beer, and burgers, so we’re good to go.
First off, the beer. This is the reason to go. At 9.50 GBP the stein may not have been economical and was likely a marketing move, but volume was appropriate, and quality was good. St. Andrews Brewing Company IPA never lets you down.

Unfortunately, the burger was a bit of a let-down. At the same 9.50 GBP as the stein of beer, the classic Balgove Beef Burger (no extras), comes dressed with lettuce, tomato, and relish. The patty was bland, even when helped along with some good mustard, and the toppings didn’t really make much of an impact. Bun was fine, but nothing remarkable. Also went with onion rings as the side, and damn I love a good onion ring, but was bummed out, as these were pretty tasteless as well. Wouldn’t go so far as to say it was a bad burger, but was disappointing.
Vibe was definitely not a pub, which makes sense, as it isn’t technically one. It’s a barn, with some big wooden tables, gravel instead of cow poop underfoot, and a big open-fire BBQ in the back, which was pretty sweet. Tables are shared, so you’re elbow to elbow with your neighbours, which means either making new friends, and/or awkwardly listening in to other peoples’ dates. Balgove is definitely catering towards tourists though, so it’s not a place where you’re going to linger, as they are trying to turn over tables, which is fair.
Good For: A big group of friends after a long day of golfing (this seemed to be the majority of the clientele). Steins of beer. Viewing Highland cattle.
Not Good For: A casual pub night. Eating burgers. Watching sports, because there are no TV’s.
Cost: 19 GBP for a stein and a burger
